Five-year results of accelerated partial breast irradiation: A single-institution retrospective review of 289 cases

AbstractPurpose The purpose of the study was to describe our institutional experience with accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) using multicatheter brachytherapy high-dose-rate. We report 5-year survival outcomes, cosmesis, and treatment-related toxicity. Methods Materials This included a retrospective review patients who underwent breast-conserving surgery followed by APBI at institution from 2004 2017. Results A total 289 were evaluated. Median followup 72 months. age 70 years. only primary treatment in 86.2% cases early-stage cancer second conservative 13.8%. implant performed postoperatively 213 (73.7%) intraoperatively 76 (26.3%). most common radiation schemes 10 fractions 3.4 Gy eight 4 Gy. Elderly or frail (10%) received single 16 dose. Of patients, 215 met Groupe Européen de Curiethérapie-European Society for Radiotherapy Oncology criteria APBI; this group, late side effects Grade 2 (G2) fibrosis (14.8%), skin discoloration catheter points (8.8%), telangiectasia (0.5%). cosmetic result considered excellent good 88.3% cases. Five-year local control, disease-free, cancer-specific, overall rates 98.9%, 96.7%, 99.1%, 95.6%, respectively.
